Pop up stores may just keep popping up
Sydney has recently embraced the retail
phenomenon from overseas, which has seen more temporary or ‘pop-up’ stores to
promote discovery of a brand and product whilst embracing the booming realm of
the online retail marketplace. This strategy attempts to attract customers to the
company's website, or simply targeting the spot where potential customers are
shopping.
Samsung
recently launched a ‘pop up’ stall in Sydney’s CBD just a few shops away from
the iconic Apple Store in George St, Sydney. They launched their new Samsung
Galaxy SII in competition with the Apple Iphone and Ipad. This method gave them
a forum in which to launch their new product whilst reaching their target
audience.
Lisa
Andersen, the manager of the Empty Spaces Project at the University of
Technology in Sydney. She claims it's an entirely new look for the Australian
retail sector.
”I think it's about, this is about the future of retail. I think
it's about retail reinventing itself as a consumer experience”.
Pop
up stores may be used by retailers for three main reasons:
- To promote or
launch a new product such as the recent Samsung pop up stall in Sydney (often
1-2 weeks)
- To clear old/new
stock particularly during Christmas and mid year sale seasons (1-3 months on
average)
- Temporary sites
as retail venues are in negotiation (6-12 months)
It’s
time to think about the design of retail spaces and how we as designers can
better engage and encourage a memorable consumer experience. It is also time to
perhaps consider the benefits of so called ‘pop up stores’ and the way they
will shape and change the way we shop. Perhaps one day shopping will be less
about bags in your hands and more about the number of clicks in your virtual
trolley.
